The growth of motor vehicle use largely contributes to the issues of city congestion and vehicle emissions, especially in urban areas. Transit signal priority is an efficient way to improve the operation performance of transit, which will help attract transit ridership from private car owners, so as to relieve traffic congestion. However, transit signal priority control may also sacrifice the right-of-way of passenger cars in the non-priority direction. Therefore, in order to improve the operation efficiency of the entire intersection towards a sustainable transport system, this paper proposed a multi-objective optimization model for transit signal planning in a signalized intersection based on vehicle emission and delay reduction. The proposed model is solved through genetic algorithm and a real world case study shows that the optimized signal timing plan has a better performance compared with the current signal timing plan.
