Platform product design can largely reduce design and production cost by use of this method appropriately, and at the same time to satisfy market need. However, problems often arisen when companies are confronted with the increasing number of product types in platform products, one of the most important problems is: which components to be selected as common part in platform products. By considering cost components for platform product in view of supply chain, this paper gives an optimal model for the problem. Using genetic algorism, we get the optimal solution for this model. A numerical example is given to show the operation process in MATLAB 7.0; the result shows which products can be selected as common product and how much the total cost is.
