The paper examines commuting behavior from employment sub-centers to residences in a metropolitan region. Traffic analysis zones are arranged in order of employment density using a rank-size distribution to identify discrete clusters of employment nodes. For each employment zone an employment location specific preference function for the journey from work to home is estimated from travel data. This allows the spatial extent of each employment center labor market to be determined. The mean trip length for the commute home from each employment center is explained by the parameters of the quadratic function that best fits the preference function. Results are presented using data for 1972, 1983 and 1994 for the city of Sapporo, Japan. Growth in population and employment with a poly centric employment formation in the suburbs has led to an increase in the region's mean trip length. A multivariate model estimates change over time.
