There is a significant consideration to include humans as part of the NASA future missions aimed to explore the solar system. The current NASA plans consist of permanent habitation of the Earth's Moon and a visit to Mars. An extended presence of humans on other planets is quite challenging and requires establishing of the critical infrastructure to support the essential needs for such a presence. A critical requirement for such a presence is to have a robust In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) capability. This manuscript covers the current state of the art and the challenges of implementing ISRU technology on Mars.
