Houston described the economic value of America's beaches. Few understand the large contribution beaches make to the national economy. Similarly, few realize the contributions maritime transportation and oil and gas production make to the national economy. Engineers that design infrastructure supporting beaches, maritime transportation, and oil and gas production make an important contribution to improving America's standard of living.
