Permanent magnet synchronous motors are employed as traction motors in locomotives equipped with direct drive traction systems, where the wheelsets are connected to the motor rotors through flexible couplings. Due to the unique structure of the traction system, rotor eccentricity failures can directly impact the vibration characteristics of the motor and other key components of the locomotive. In order to investigate the effect of rotor eccentricity on dynamic performance of the traction system during the operation of a permanent magnet direct-drive locomotive, the vehicle–track coupled dynamics model with an eccentric rotor is established in this study; the detailed mechanical structure of the direct drive traction system and the nonlinearity of wheel–rail contact are considered. The simulation results demonstrate that the unbalanced magnetic pull and centrifugal force caused by rotor eccentricity can deteriorate the service conditions of the motor and exacerbate abnormal vibrations within the vehicle system. The frequency components associated with the rotational frequency can be found in the vibration spectrum.
