Construction, operation, and maintenance of freeway subprojects (pavement, bridges, tunnels) have been included in the system boundary of life-cycle carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. As an important subproject, greening engineering not only improves road environment but also offers benefits by absorbing some CO2, which could offset some emissions from the whole freeway life-cycle. However, previous studies rarely considered the influence of plants’ absorption. To measure and evaluate freeway emissions comprehensively, life-cycle assessment was applied to the operation phase of greening Xihan Freeway. Collecting data on greening engineering completion and alteration plans, and calculating emissions by 34 tree and, 19 shrub species—on interchanges, roadsides, bridges—showed CO2 sequestration by plants from greening engineering is 253.28 t/yr: greater at roadsides than at interchanges. Total sequestration accounts for 0.17% of transportation’s CO2 emissions. The findings could provide insights to decrease CO2 emissions from freeway construction and management and enrich highway life-cycle environmental assessment content.
