Today, travel costs are at around $.54 per mile. This value is based on factors such as fuel, maintenance, insurance, registration, parking, tolls, and depreciation. With the advent of shared autonomous vehicles (SAVs) and fully self-driving vehicles, many of these factors can be addressed that could ultimately lower the costs per mile to travel. It is anticipated that SAVs are expected to impact both time and costs for consumers significantly. Consumers will have the ability to get work done while they are in self-driven cars which makes SAVs not only time efficient, but also cost efficient with the increase in productivity. Current car-sharing, ride-hailing, and ride-sharing barriers can be addressed all at once with the utilization of SAV systems which could set a new trend in our transportation. In this day and age where advertisements are virtually everywhere, the streaming of internet advertisements inside SAV systems could also play a key factor in reducing the costs of our future travels. For the purposes of realizing the advantages of SAVs, a better understanding of future costs of travel is necessary. The goal of this research project is to estimate future travel costs using SAV systems by evaluating its impact on society using key factors such as current transit costs, infrastructure costs, fuel costs, advertisements costs, and future travel costs. For this purpose, extensive literature reviews were studied and a rough model was constructed to analyze and evaluate the effects SAV systems would have on travelers. This has led to the hypothesis that SAVs can ultimately lower the costs of future travels for the general public while also serving as an efficient mode of travel.
