Intersections are the important hinge of the road traffic system. Road accident rates or fatalities are traditionally used to assess safety levels. In some cases, the lack of good and reliable accident records have hampered proper analyses. A promising approach that overcomes this problem is a traffic conflict technique which relies on observations of critical traffic situations for safety analysis. This paper proposes an automatic detecting method for traffic conflicts at intersections. By taking Visual C++ and OpenCV as tools and processing video image sequences recorded by camera, the available program to detect kinematics parameters of vehicles was developed. A Kalman filter was used to smooth the kinematics parameters. According to the analysis of traffic conflict characteristics, a critical value of conflict discrimination was defined. Then the automatic detection algorithm of traffic conflicts was developed and the conflicts could be shown in the program. A case was used to demonstrate the program.
