Long truck queues at the gate of a container terminal often restrict the efficiency of the terminal and generate serious air pollution. To reduce gate congestion, a new layout of the gate system with reversible lanes (RLs) has been applied to real-world smart container terminals due to the space limitation. This paper uses simulation to evaluate impacts on service level of the gate system of scheduling rules of RLs. A variety of scenarios with different truck arrival patterns and various rules of changing traffic direction of RLs are modelled to explore efficient management methods of RLs. A series of experiments to be carried out aim to demonstrate that setting RLs other than traditional management methods of the gate system is an effective way to alleviate gate congestion. The gate with RL based on scheduling rule of real-time queuing information significantly improves the service level of the gate system and has good robustness under the imbalance of the truck traffic entering and departing a terminal.
