Autonomous transportation system (ATS) has become one of the important trends in the next generation of intelligent transportation system (ITS). However, there is still a lack of theoretical research on the functional architecture of ATS. Even for the existing functional framework of ITS in China and the United States, shortages such as unclear definition, cumbersome construction process, and weak correlation between functions and services still exist and need to be improved. In this paper, based on the structured analysis (SA) method, a standardized functional architecture paradigm is proposed. Then a scientific and reasonable model is established for the realization process of ATS service. Finally, the validity of the construction method of the functional architecture is demonstrated by the automatic lane change service. The proposed theoretical approach can provide ideas for the design of the ATS system framework and offer a reference for the development of autonomous transportation.
