Given increasing environmental problem and energy issues, what is of great importance but has not been given consideration is the energy efficiency of rail system. Train timetable optimization is one of the most effective and feasible approach to minimize tractive energy consumption. To maximize the utilization of regenerative energy without causing negative influence on regular operation of metro system, this paper formulates an integrated approach to adjust the train operating interval which applies variable intervals to optimize train timetables. Then, the paper uses the algorithm for integer linear programing to solve this model. Based on the basic data of a particular metro line, we optimize the train timetable considering both peak and off-peak hour passenger flow. It is shown that variable train operating interval is an effective approach to save energy consumption considering its applicability and feasibility.
