This paper studies the commuting behavior in a competitive transportation system, which consists of a subway and a parallel road with a capacity-constrained bottleneck. Every morning, commuters can arrive at the workplace by private car only or first drive their cars to the bottleneck, park there, and then take subway to their destination. Considering the body congestion in carriage and the parking fee, we develop a bottleneck model describing the commuters’ travel behavior. Using this model, we further analyze their departure time choice and the total social cost of the system. It is shown that there exists a scheme with suitable parking fee to minimize the total social cost of the system.
