Traffic congestion has become the new constant state in cities of China, so drivers have been affected by traffic congestion over the long-term, which leads to changes in drivers’ visual characteristics. Indices of drivers’ vision during the driving process were selected to investigate effects of traffic congestion on drivers’ physiology and behavior. Professional equipment was utilized to conduct an experiment on driver’s visual characteristics under different congestion scenarios. With this experimental data, the differences of drivers’ indicators were analyzed using the statistical method under different traffic congestion states. Results show that increasing traffic congestion level makes the distribution of the drivers’ fixation points become dispersed, with drivers’ fixation points transferred to the central main viewing area (short distance) under the state of traffic congestion. This evolution trend can be interpreted as based on the change of road information amount: if a driver is presented with traffic congestion, he/she needs to handle more traffic flow and more complex road information than common state, such as many pedestrians, adjacent vehicles and variable message signs.
