This paper aims to investigate the characteristics of mixed traffic flow comprising regular and autonomous vehicles. An improved cellular automata model integrated with a multi-agent system was employed as the modeling platform. A 3-lane freeway stretch with one on-ramp and one off-ramp was applied. Two sets of rules for lane changing were designed to address mild and aggressive lane changing behavior. With extensive simulation studies, we obtained some promising results. First, the inclusion of autonomous vehicles to road could considerably improve traffic. And, the level of improvement increases with the penetration rate. Second, the lane changing frequency between neighboring lanes evolves with traffic density along a fundamental-diagram-like curve. Third, the impact of autonomous vehicles on the overall traffic flow characteristics and lane-wise lane changing mainly correlate with their smart maneuver in both lane-changing and car-following.
