Compared with the time to collision (TTC), the deceleration rate to avoid crash (DRAC) of the rear vehicle when vehicles approach can reduce the relative speed, the operational instability and the proximity degree to a real accident. Based on normal deceleration observation and emergency braking test of vehicles on freeway general sections, toll stations, and interchange exits and entrances, the DRAC representing the conflict severity is calibrated, and the traffic conflict risk assessment method of weaving area is established. Using a suburban expressway as an example, the safety status of different traffic organization schemes in the weaving area are compared and the recommended scheme is put forward. Reasonable traffic organization can significantly reduce the traffic conflict rate in weaving area, standardize traffic order, and improve safety level. It also verifies the effectiveness of the traffic risk assessment method based on DRAC in weaving area.
