The economy of Pakistan has fallen considerably in the last decades GDP by 6.2%–3.3%. The condition of Pakistan railways (PR) has dilapidated since the start of the 21st century. The CPEC project emphasizes on revitalizing the rundown situation of PR by up-gradation of the entire main line (ML) railways. The project is divided into three phases, i.e. ML1, ML2, and ML3. In this study, we have tried to give an overview regarding the potential impact of ML1 on the PR. The goal of this study is to highlight the root causes that have affected the PR, signify the causes of railway accidents in Pakistan, and provide recommendations. This is done by considering the importance of ML1 on reducing the rail accidents and resurgence of Pakistan’s economy. The salient features of ML1 are mentioned alongside the potential opportunities this new project implements in the PR system.
