The deep waters off of the US West Coast and Hawaii dictate that renewable energy goals, and specifically offshore wind development goals, be achieved with floating offshore wind solutions. As floating offshore wind is a new industry with no existing dedicated marine terminals on the US West Coast or Hawaii, the specialized onshore infrastructure needed to support this development have yet to be addressed in detail. An overview of the floating offshore wind technologies that may be deployed in the deep waters of these regions is presented to understand the scale and complexity of work that ports will need to accommodate. Key aspects of terminal planning for fabrication, assembly, and wind turbine integration of these various foundation systems are explored to provide an understanding of facility functional requirements, highlighting the differences in infrastructure where it depends on the selected type of offshore wind technology. Additionally, port considerations such as navigation rules, air draft restrictions, and channel limitations are examined.
