This paper emphasizes the importance of performing dynamic analysis in connection with passing ship problems. A dynamic analysis methodology is presented. Static forces imposed on a moored ship by a passing vessel are presented for representative examples and compared to those computed using dynamic analyses. Conclusions regarding the importance of dynamic analyses are drawn along with observations pertaining to methods for ameliorating undesirable dynamic motions and mooring line forces.
