Public transit route choice is the key technology of the public transit passenger information system. In this paper, a public transit route inquiry theory, which is based on the difference in travel behavior of public transit passengers, is presented. The critical issue in the theory is to analyze the optimization inquiry objectives, which consist of transfer times, travel time and travel costs, and to design the different algorithms. Combined with the characteristics of geographic information systems (GIS), a public transit route inquiry system is developed. It is not only able to provide accurate, reliable and comprehensive information service for passengers, but also to provide intelligent decision support for the bus company in bus dispatching management. Application in the public transit network of Lanzhou city showed that the proposed algorithm was feasible and effective. Furthermore, the system was intuitive and had a friendly interface that was easy and simple for users to operate.
