Toyota has developed a prototype Intelligent Multi-mode Transit System (IMTS) as an automated people mover system. IMTS is an automated bus based system, handling a maximum transit capacity of over 16000 passengers per hour. IMTS provides fully automated, driverless vehicles operation on exclusive tracks. IMTS vehicles are guided automatically along magnetic makers embedded in dedicated guideways. IMTS attracts passengers and owners/operators because it can save capital and maintenance cost in comparison with AGT. This paper describes the main characteristics and vehicle control functions of IMTS.
