China has moved into a stage for fast urbanization. Urbanization strategies are essential for improving economic competition ability and promoting modernization. Transportation sustainability plays an essential role in the urbanization process. There are obvious contradictions between transportation infrastructure construction and environmental conservation. In China, environmental problems associated with the quick increase of roadway transportation have been fully recognized. Air pollution is one of the major problems caused by increased vehicle travel, leading to severe concerns on environmental conservation and public health. This paper discusses transportation sustainability in China and the measures taken to reduce negative impacts from transportation development. Our analysis indicates that effective enforcement regulations are needed to ensure the reduction of vehicle emissions to reach the goal of transportation sustainability.
