In signalized intersections, lanes at the approach are usually arranged for left-turns, through lanes, and right-turns from inside to outside. When there are off-ramps upstream of the intersection approach, a lanes-exchanging design may be applied. In this condition, the left-turning lanes are set at the median. This paper concentrates on the characteristic of lane-changing in exchanging conditions. This study distinguishes the lanes exchanging into two types: complete exchanging design (CED) and partial exchanging design (PED), based on the number of exchanging lanes. The lane-changing behaviors under the two types were observed by video, and lane-changing frequency in each grid of study area was calculated. Finally, the adaptability of PED and CED was discussed. It is found that PED works well at a low level of volume-input, and CED may make better use of exchanged lanes at high levels.
