Optimization of conventional bus lines under the background of rail transit is vital to the urban transportation system. Most of the previous studies propose models or algorithm which pay much attention to characteristics of bus routes. But, the cohesive relationship between bus and rail transit is ignored. In this paper, nine indexes are determined, considering both operational characteristics of bus lines and spatial relationship between bus and rail transit. The nine indexes are intersection points, parallel length, coincident stations, coincident length, coincident proportion, repetitive proportion, length, daily passenger volume, and departure interval. Furthermore, hierarchical clustering and K-means clustering methods are combined to analyze the bus lines quantitatively, based on the data in Changzhou City. The paper also discusses targeted optimization policies according to the classification results. The findings are helpful for coordination and optimization of bus lines and rail transit.
