This study presents an integrated product and process development (IPPD) method conceptual design for a safety driven process for a proposed NASA lunar modular habitat with autonomous operation and deep space radiation reliability. Planned for 2028, the lunar modular habitat is a platform that will be deployed in the surface of the Moon to serve as a habitat for manned missions on the moon surface. It was proposed by NASA and stated as a priority with a 2028 start date by the National Space Council of the United States. This study will perform a detailed IPPD method for the proposed lunar modular habitat in the deep space environment that includes radiation and the required reliability. This study will also present the characteristics needed for the autonomous operation of the habitat. The Integrated Product and Process Development (IPPD) method is known for its use in multidisciplinary development of highly complex engineering products and concepts. In this study, the IPPD method and its steps are utilized for the conceptual design of the autonomous habitat. For that capability to exist, it is important to include the IPPD method in its design phase and follow its steps for multidisciplinary development. The work was developed in the Systems Engineering and Design level of conceptualization.
