Highway Safety Manual (HSM) provides prediction models to quantify the potential safety impacts for various types of highways. HSM predictive models have their limitations due to the diversity in jurisdictions. Therefore, HSM recommends to calibrate the predictive models to enhance the accuracy of predicted crash frequencies. This paper demonstrates the calibration procedure for basic freeway segments in Kansas. Most of the required data were gathered from two main databases maintained by Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT). Further, crash data and geometric data of selected segments were integrated in ArcGIS. A minimum sample size of 446 segments was estimated corresponding to 95% confidence level and consequently, 521 segments were used for the calibration. Estimated calibration factors were 1.0990, 0.9430, 2.0874, and 1.8367 for multiple vehicle fatal and injury, single vehicle fatal and injury, multiple vehicle property damage only, and single vehicle property damage only models, respectively. The calibration factor larger than 1.00 implies that HSM methodology underpredcit crashes for Kansas basic freeway segments and vice versa.
