The dynamic response of railway crossings at the interface of changing strata is highly complex, making the analysis of their seismic response crucial for ensuring the seismic design and operational safety of railway structures. In this paper, a mechanical model is developed based on the dynamic response characteristics of railways. The railway is simplified into two semi-infinite double-layer elastic foundation beams under different stratum conditions along the longitudinal direction. The impact of traveling waves is considered to simulate earthquakes, and the longitudinal seismic response of the railway under changing strata is derived by solving the displacement differential equation of the railway and the foundation under the rail. It is found that as the elastic interlayer stiffness increases, the cross-section rail becomes more susceptible to seismic dynamics. A greater stiffness gap between the two soil layers results in a higher peak shear moment at the abrupt change of the bottom layer. Additionally, a higher foundation stiffness under the rail leads to a greater impact of formation abrupt changes on the dynamic response of the structure. Design guidelines are provided, such as considering the seismic performance of lines with high foundation stiffness under the rail during design, operation, and maintenance. Overall, the method presented in this paper offers valuable guidance for seismic design and operational safety across changing strata.
