In the research reported in this paper, an integrated computer-based approach is developed to render the determination of national goods flow patterns systematic, relatively simple, and compatible with limited data availability. Based on available data on the demand and supply of major commodities in different national regions, the gravity model is applied to determine a partial, national freight O-D matrix representing a subset of all commodities. Next, total truck O-D trip matrices are developed based primarily on truck traffic counts on strategic national axes. The comparison between the partial national matrix and truck O-D trip matrices enables an estimation of the volume of gross national freight movements between various regions. This approach was applied to perform a national freight study in Lebanon.
