Vehicle detection and identification system is a very important part of intelligent transportation system (ITS). This paper proposed a vehicle detection and identification system which bases on video and radio frequency identification (RFID). It includes two subsystems: the video vehicle detection (WD) subsystem and the RFID subsystem. It has complementary advantages of the two technologies by combining them. It can detect and identify vehicles more accurately and faster with much more abundant information, much faster and less power consumption. The experiment results demonstrate that this system can accurately detect and identify vehicles moving on roads. The detection and identification are real-time.
