The road structure type of an expressway has an important influence on the function and efficiency of the expressway, and it’s an important factor for the comprehensive evaluation of the expressway. Three types of expressways were compared (ground, viaduct, and underground expressways), and the long-distance composite hub is proposed. In order to select a reasonable expressway road structure type, a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP) was used to establish a comprehensive evaluation model for expressway road structure types using selected indices, such as the length of continuous viaduct. The model was applied to the evaluation of road structure type selection for reconstruction planning of Jiefang Avenue in Wuhan. Results show that the expressway with a continuous viaduct structure (EoCV) can improve the speed, ensure the traffic flow is continuous and rapid, and reduce interference with ground traffic. It is the primary choice of expressway structure type.
