The Tom Lantos Tunnels at Devil's Slide are located along the California coast between Pacifica and Monterey, west of the San Francisco Bay Area in a region with steep and unstable geological formation. The project replaces the stretch of coastline for much of the distance between the two towns that had a long history of closure due to recurring rockslides. After years of studies, it was decided to bypass it with two inland tunnels, providing a safe, dependable highway between the two towns. The twin tunnels are 9 m wide by 6.8 m high, 1.3 km long, and sit in very complex geological settings in a high seismic zone and an environmentally-sensitive area. The tunnels were constructed beneath San Pedro Mountain using the New Austrian Tunneling Method — a method determined to be the most viable because of its flexibility, adaptability, and ability for adjustment locally to the site's changing ground conditions.At 1,310 m long, it is the longest highway tunnel in California. (The Wawona Tunnel was completed during 1933 in Yosemite National Park. At 1,290 m in length, it was previously the longest highway tunnel in California.)
