The pantograph-catenary interaction is crucial for running trains on electrical railway lines. The coupled dynamic problem of an in space stationary system, the catenary system, and a system in motion, the pantograph, is dependent on the behaviour of both systems individually as well as combined. Most studies about the dynamic behaviour of railway catenary systems have a frequency range of interest between 0 and 20 Hz. This paper presents and discuss results from field measurements that indicate that the frequency range between 6 Hz and 7 Hz is of great importance for the dynamic behaviour of the pantograph-catenary interaction. Measurements sampled at several locations during regular traffic has been used to identify important frequencies while a numerical model has been used to identify the origin and shape of the movement. Furthermore, this study highlights that the frequency content in the response of a catenary section is dependent on different parameters, and that there are both similarities and differences from section to section, and from span to span.
