The development of sport and pleasure navigation is more often than not connected to the presence of yacht harbors and marinas in the relevant areas. Often environmental and economical conditions make it difficult to construct a new harbor for sport and pleasure navigation purposes. On the other hand, berth demand is constantly increasing. The rehabilitation and re-use of existing former commercial and fishing harbors, or part of them to form yacht harbors, can help to solve several problems in providing new berths. Among these problems are the construction costs, the co-existence of pleasure and commercial navigation and the need for facilities and services that are normally provided by a town. Furthermore, the re-use of a disused harbor area gives a chance to create a new link between town and sea, lake or river, as many examples of recently rebuilt waterfronts can demonstrate.
