Existing ramp metering approaches can sometimes not proactively offer a traffic control solution, especially when traffic demand is high. However, connected vehicles provide a possibility for active traffic control. Based on the study of connected vehicles, this study proposes a systemic architecture of coordinated ramp metering under the connected vehicle environment. A Paramics-based simulation test bed was applied to a real life network to simulate and evaluate coordinated ramp metering. The simulation found that the ramp metering approach proposed in this study was effective at improving traffic efficiency. Sensitivity analysis results found the designed ramp metering approach was sensitive to control loop length.
