Since 1960, multiple samples of lunar soil have been available for scientists. These samples are so limited in volume that they can be used only for the most important tests. Therefore, over the years there have been developed numerous artificial lunar soil materials, called lunar soil simulants, to enable lunar research programmes. Feasibility and scientific success of these projects, focused on a wide range of topics, are dependent on physicochemical and mechanical properties of a given lunar soil simulant. Generally, simulants are supposed to be effective copycats of lunar soil in every possible aspect: from chemical composition and mineralogy to grading and mechanical properties. Nevertheless, numerous out of produced simulants have not met expectations and proved not to be suitable for specific purposes. There is an urgent need for a complex but at the same time fast and reliable method for the assessment of lunar soil simulants. In authors’ opinion a method based on multivariate statistics involving multiple parameters of a given simulant would be the best solution to the problem.
