With 40,000 employees, 14 Metro lines, 2 RER lines (the regional transit express), 2 tramway lines and 246 bus lines, the RATP, the Paris Mass Transit Authority, is the biggest mass transit company in Europe and one of the leading transit companies in the world. It serves an area of 12,000 square kilometres with 11 million residents and 5 million jobs. This area produces twenty-eight percent of the country's wealth. The RATP is a publicly owned company created in 1949. The company, which operates all transit modes, provides services in the hypocenter, and 3 counties in the near suburbs and 4 counties in the outer suburbs.
