Serious game (SG) has been proved to be a promising approach to learning and education. The design, plan, and operation of transportation systems involve a wide range of human behaviors and decision makings. The idea of gamification also provides vast opportunities for traffic planning and design, traffic operation and control, traffic behavior and simulation, and traffic safety and education. This paper presents a review of SG applications in several subfields of transportation research. Academic literatures and digital games concerning the traffic-related contents were included. Transportation domain knowledge inside the games were identified. Meanwhile, the merits and limitations of current SG applications are discussed. On root of these literature reviews and discussions, guidelines, and future research perspectives of SG applications in transportation research are recommended.
