This paper shows how Asian cities are leading the way to sustainable mobility based on a set of selected indicators. The reasoning behind the selection of the indicators is discussed. They focus on measuring the sustainability of personal mobility (versus freight mobility) for land-based transportation. Using the selected indicator set a comparative analysis is presented showing how Asian cities compare with major metropolitan areas in the United States, Canada, Australia, Europe and other countries. The paper will discuss the areas of sustainable mobility where Asian cities are performing well and which categories they need to improve on. From the analysis, the paper will demonstrate why Asian cities are currently leading the way to sustainable mobility. The challenge for Asian cities is whether they can maintain their leadership in this area and how they can improve on other issues, in particular air quality and traffic congestion. The paper provides a summary of development best practices based on the experience of developed countries, in order for Asian cities to continue to take the lead in providing sustainable mobility.
