To help ensure vehicular safety, temporary concrete barriers with small drain openings set into the base are placed adjacent to traffic lanes on highway construction projects. A line of these barriers along the roadway forms a gutter interrupted by a series of rectangular openings, intended to handle runoff from the pavement. The purpose of this investigation was to develop information regarding the hydraulic performance of this drainage system. Capacity for individual inlets was measured for typical flow conditions over a range of longitudinal and cross slopes. Application methods for results developed during this investigation are suggested.
