The IntelliDriveSM concept has been in the making in the USA through research done by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) since 2003. It was conceived as a Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication medium, where communication between vehicles and the infrastructure has been perceived as a new way of linking the system components through a wireless medium. The FHWA and State agencies are trying to develop standards and operational procedures of detection, communications and displays in vehicles. The author of this paper looks at the potential of implementing some of the components of the IntelliDriveSM technology on certain segments of Maryland highways and the transition to real-time V2V information exchange. This paper also explores the opportunities for traveler information dissemination for congestion and incident management in Maryland through Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) initially, while evolving to fully deployed IntelliDriveSM infrastructure as vehicle on-board systems mature and funding becomes available.
