A reasonable bus network is helpful to improve the quality of bus service and save travel time of travelers. The basis of bus network optimization is the diagnosis of the bus routes’ operation state and the identification of the lines to be optimized. In order to evaluate the operation quality of a bus network comprehensively and optimize the bus routes more accurately, eight multi-dimensional indicators and calculation models are proposed from the travelers’ perspective. A novel approach is proposed to diagnose bus routes operation state, and four types of bus lines that need to be optimized will be identified. Then, the identification thresholds of indicators are determined based on the actual bus operation data and passenger flow data. The proposed method can contribute to multi-dimensional evaluation and diagnosis analysis of bus routes operation and identify the bus routes to be optimized automatically based on large-scale public transport data.
