Increased heavy truck traffic on expressways has raised concerns about safety and capacity in China. Expressway with separation of cars and trucks and exclusive car ramps (ECR) were designed to address these concerns. Currently, there are few studies on design indicators of ECR. Here, we propose a novel calculation model of the widening value for the ECR according to vehicle body movement theory and Ackermann steering geometry. MATLAB software is used to calculate the recommended widening value of the ECR based on the midline radius of the lane and the relationship between the radius and the widening value. The results of this paper are concise, easy to use, and will be a key reference for future designs of ECR.
