During the past two decades, electric bicycles have become increasingly used in urban areas in China. However, electric bicycles have raised concerns about their safety performance, particularly at unsignalized intersections. The primary objective of this study is to identify the characteristics of traffic conflicts between electric bicycles and motor vehicles at unsignalized intersections. To achieve the research objective, data was collected at six unsignalized intersections in the Kunming area in China. A total of 2500 traffic conflicts were used for further data analysis. Based on the field data, the types of conflicts and the most dangerous regions were identified. Conflict prediction models were developed between conflicting volumes and conflict counts for main types of traffic conflicts. A strong relationship existed between conflict counts and conflicting volumes. The results of this research will help transportation professionals better understand various factors affecting safety in unsignalized intersections. With such knowledge, traffic managers can formulate more effective management policies.
