To improve the level of service of transit and implement transit priority in new towns, the average spacing of the arterial road network is recommended, aiming at meeting the requirement of bus stop coverage rate. First, the trip process and average walking distance by bus travelers are analyzed on the basis of defining the average spacing of the arterial road network. Then, with respect to transit priority, bus line configurations require that bus stopscover no less than 50 percent and 70 percent of the whole area, by defining the bus stop coverage as the range of a 150-m and 300-m radius around the stop, respectively. Under this restriction, the average spacing for the arterial road network is calculated. With the consideration of practical operability, the recommended value is proposed as the average spacing of the arterial network in new towns. The recommended value not only truly reflects the reasonable layout features of the road network, but also improves public transport accessibility in new towns.
