This paper analyzes and models the metro passengers' modal choice when they have to take a vertical shift where escalators and stairways are available at the same time. Data is collected via photography based RP surveys in four typical stations of Shanghai Metro. A series of binary Logistic regression models are specified and estimated indicating that personal characteristics (i.e., gender, age), trip characteristics (i.e., with/without luggage/child, departure day of week and time of day) and facility conditions (i.e., station, walking direction and distance, length of queue for escalators) influence the passengers' choice. The qualitative and quantitative findings could be used to predict the passenger flow in a more accurate way.
