Based on the calculation model of CO2 emission, the model boundary and time interval was determined, as well as the diesel CO2 emission factor and CO2 emission factor for purchased electricity. Based on the converted turnovers of railway transportation, the CO2 emission intensities and carbon emission characteristics were analyzed. Results showed that the indirect CO2 emissions by electric locomotives were higher than direct emissions by diesel locomotives; indirect emission has become a main carbon source for railway transport. Similarly, the carbon intensity of electric locomotives was larger than the diesel locomotives. The implementation of electrification and operation of HSR would increase the energy consumption, but overall the energy efficiency of electric locomotives is superior to diesel locomotives. The indirect effect of CO2 emission reduction of electric locomotives is higher than other transportation mode.
