Rural road is an important part of highway network, and one of the most important infrastructures in rural area. Along with the enlargement of rural road scale, the traffic safety problem is more serious. At present, there are no systematic methods or effective tools to diagnose rural road safety problem. In order to help engineers to fleetly evaluate rural road and put forward improving countermeasures, this paper puts forward a set of rural road traffic safety diagnosis methods and technical process in accordance with the current situation of our country, which can offer technical support to rural traffic safety guarantee and guide the construction, management and maintenance of the rural road. This method firstly analyzes the potential traffic safety problems of rural road, then puts forward rural road traffic safety affecting factors and the classification, and designs a rural road traffic safety diagnosis table suitable for our country. The engineers can apply the diagnosis table to field survey and score according to the significance and severity of the problem. Then rank the affecting factors according to weight in order to get the priority order of the rural road problems to be solved. And offer the improving countermeasures based on the order, applying benefit-cost-ratio to rank and optimize the improving countermeasures. Finally, the paper takes a typical road section in Jiangsu province as example to verify the reliability of the method.
