The wind-induced vibration control of high-rise buildings is an active research direction in civil engineering field. Instead of traditional controllers such as active tuned mass damper (ATMD), a new type of damper — MR-TMD called as smart TMD in this paper that combines MR damper and passive TMD is introduced to suppress the wind-induced vibration of high-rise buildings. Modified Bingham model is used to describe the mechanical characteristics of MR dampers. In the present investigation, frequency and damping are assumed as random parameters considering metrical uncertainty and structural randomness. Based on sliding mode control (SMC) theory and linear quadratic regular (LQR) control theory, one semi-active control strategy is realized to obtain the practical control force for reducing the wind vibration of building with smart TMD. When structural output state is limited, control rule is given as well. It is shown in numerical example that the controller with designed smart TMD has good control effectiveness to random high-rise structures under wind.
