Rockets are currently the only reliable means for transportation of payloads from Earth’s surface into orbit. Thrust vectoring through a gimbaled propulsion unit provides the means for directional control and stability. A small scale test vehicle can be designed to replicate the characteristic dynamics of a rocket and perform controlled maneuvers. Utilizing consumer hobby electronics, the vehicle can be stabilized with a linear quadratic regulator to execute takeoff, flight along a predetermined trajectory, and powered descent maneuvers. This testbed provides the opportunity to test robust control algorithms for applications that would be difficult or expensive to execute at full scale.
