The use of warm mix asphalt (WMA) can provide a reduced carbon footprint and extended paving season during the construction of airfield pavements. However, lower production temperatures and limited aging make WMA mixes more susceptible to rutting. Hardened binders in reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) materials can enhance the rutting resistance of such mixes. The Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA’s) Advisory Circular (AC) for airfield construction neither provides any guidance on WMA applications nor approves the use of RAP in surface courses. Considering this, the FAA’s National Airport Pavement and Materials Research Center (NAPMRC) embarked on an accelerated pavement testing (APT) study involving WMA and RAP. WMA was used to surface two full-scale test lanes with and without 20% RAP in the top lifts. The bottom two lifts of those two lanes were paved with the same WMA-RAP mix. Both test lanes were divided into three test sections: North, Center, and South. APT was conducted on the center sections to assess rutting potential as the asphalt concrete layer is cooling down immediately after paving and is due to open soon. The two-prong trafficking experiment involved channelized trafficking in descending order of temperature, followed by wander-induced trafficking at a controlled temperature. This paper discusses the observed rutting performances and sensor responses. The presence of RAP in the surface lift reduced surface rut accumulation consistently in both types of traffic tests.
